Moscow - Saba:
Following news of a meeting between Russian and US Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, called for the development of Russian-American cooperation in environmental protection, infrastructure, and energy in the Arctic and beyond.
Dmitriev wrote on his X platform, according to Sputnik on Saturday: "President Trump announced a summit with President Putin in Alaska. Alaska was born as Russian America, with its Orthodox roots, forts, and fur trade, and it reflects these ties, making the United States an Arctic state." He added: "Let's work to develop Russian-American cooperation in environmental protection, infrastructure, and energy in the Arctic and beyond." Dmitriev said: "The historic summit in Alaska is on August 15. The place is ideal: the United States and Russia are only 3.8 kilometers apart between the Diomede Islands, separated by the International Date Line. Let's move peacefully from yesterday to tomorrow." Russian President Vladimir Putin's upcoming visit to Alaska is set to be the first of its kind in history, as no Russian leader has ever visited the state.
During the Soviet era, Nikita Khrushchev, Alexei Kosygin, and Leonid Brezhnev visited the United States, while Mikhail Gorbachev visited three times and Boris Yeltsin visited five times.
