French Economy Minister Eric Lombard expressed his hope of reaching an agreement with the United States over the weekend to avoid the implementation of punitive tariffs, believing that if negotiations fail, the European Union will have to respond more forcefully.
"Regarding the tariffs, matters will likely be resolved over the weekend, given the presence of a European Commission delegation in Washington," Lombard said in a press statement Saturday evening.
"I hope we can reach an agreement over the weekend. If that doesn't happen, Europe will undoubtedly have to demonstrate greater force in its response to restore balance," Lombard added.
