Hodeida – Saba:
A meeting in Hodeida governorate on Saturday, chaired by Governor Abdullah Atifi, focused on strategies to support and expand the production of improved seeds for agricultural crops to enhance food security and sustainable agricultural development.
The discussion involved deputies of the governor, the director of the General Organization for Improved Seed Multiplication, the head of Tihama Development Authority, and other agricultural sector leaders. They explored local seed multiplication programs and the activation of scientific research to develop economically viable crop varieties.
The meeting addressed improving the quality of local seeds for maize, corn, cotton, and tomatoes to meet market needs and boost national production efficiency. It also covered developing tomato seeds for processing industries to reduce imports.
Governor Atifi stressed the local authority's strong emphasis on the agricultural sector and highlighted the improved seed multiplication project as a strategic step towards food security and self-sufficiency.
He called for greater integration between the local authority, seed multiplication organization, Tihama Development Authority, and agricultural research centers to activate field trials, improve seed quality, and align it with market and processing industry demands.
The Director of the General Organization for Improved Seed Multiplication emphasized their work on producing locally adapted improved seeds supported by field research and the importance of partnerships. The Chairman of Tihama Development Authority highlighted the need for joint efforts to support farmers and expand the cultivation of improved varieties.
The meeting also stressed strengthening extension work through agricultural associations to improve farming practices and irrigation, and recommended that improved seeds undergo successful research trials before distribution. Participatory marketing plans for agricultural products were also deemed important.
The integration of efforts between local authorities, Tihama Development Authority, the General Seed Corporation, and research centers was emphasized for the project's success and sustainability.
