Hodeida - Saba:
A meeting at the Fisheries Authority in Al Hodeida province discussed on Sunday mechanisms to develop fish marketing and activate strategic projects that meet the needs of fishermen, improve their living conditions, and enhance the performance of the fisheries sector in the province.
The meeting, attended by Shura Council member Ibrahim Aidarous, Assistant Governor Mutahar Al-Hadi, and Deputy Head of the Fisheries Authority Abdulmalik Sabra, reviewed a range of challenges and obstacles facing the fish marketing sector and their direct impact on the livelihoods of fishermen and their families.
Participants explored alternative solutions to absorb local fish production by establishing sales points in local markets across various districts and sub-districts, particularly in areas lacking marine resources. This aims to ensure regular and affordable access to fish.
They also examined the difficult living conditions faced by fishermen in Al-Jarahi and Hays districts, stressing the importance of activating economic empowerment projects to improve their income levels and sustain fishing as their primary livelihood.
Attendees emphasized the need for effective partnerships between the Fisheries Authority, local authorities, and community institutions to create a suitable environment for developing fish marketing. This includes establishing collection and cooling centers, sales points in landing areas, and providing essential services for this vital sector.
During the meeting, Aidarous highlighted the importance of doubling efforts to develop fish marketing to enhance food security and local self-sufficiency, calling for practical field approaches to address existing challenges.
For his part, Al-Hadi urged accelerating the implementation of productive and direct marketing projects to serve fishermen and provide sustainable solutions to improve their living conditions.
Sabra explained that the authority is currently focusing on promoting domestic fish marketing, expanding community benefits, and studying local market needs while linking marine production to comprehensive development plans.
The meeting concluded with several recommendations, including enhancing joint coordination to assess local market needs, activating fish sales points in targeted districts, and expanding economic empowerment projects in proportion to the challenges faced by fishermen on the western coast.
