Geneva – Saba:
A UN evaluation released Monday revealed that less than 5% of Gaza's agricultural land remains cultivatable due to Israeli occupation forces' destruction and movement restrictions. The report warns this catastrophically exacerbates food production collapse and famine risks in the besieged enclave (Palestinian News Agency WAFA).
FAO Deputy Director Beth Bechdol (who co-led the UNOSAT-backed assessment) stated: "This isn't just infrastructure loss – it's the obliteration of Gaza's entire agricultural lifeline."
Since October 7, 2023, Israel's US/EU-backed siege and genocide have caused:
175,000+ casualties (mostly women/children)
14,000+ missing
95% farmland destruction through:
▪ Bombing of irrigation systems
▪ Blockade of fertilizers/fuel
▪ Direct targeting of farmers
Pre-war: Gaza produced 25% of its food needs Current: Total dependence on trickle-flow aid (UN: 16% of required food enters daily)
