Cano - Saba:

At least nine people were killed. Boko Haram fighters killed nine people in an attack on a village in northeastern Nigeria on Thursday evening, a local official said Saturday.

Rawa Gana Modu, the political officer for the Dikwa area in Borno State, said Boko Haram fighters entered the village of Gajibo Sira, opened fire on residents, and clashed with an anti-militant group fighting alongside the army.

Modo added that "Boko Haram fighters killed nine people," including two civilians from the militant group, and wounded others.

He added that troops from the neighboring town of Dikwa helped drive the militants from the village, confirming that 10 of the attackers were killed.

On Friday, the Nigerian military announced the killing of 16 militants who attempted to attack a military base in Damboa, also in Borno State.

Nigerian forces, backed by air power, repelled the militants two hours later.

Borno State is the stronghold of the Boko Haram militant group, whose 15-year insurgency has killed more than 40,000 people and displaced thousands. Two million people in this area of Africa's most populous country.
