Muhammad Abu Afash, Director of Medical Relief in Gaza, confirmed on Saturday that the health situation across the Strip is extremely dire and signals an impending humanitarian catastrophe, with rising casualty numbers and a critical shortage of life-saving medical supplies and aid.
In a press statement, Abu Afash warned, "The Strip is experiencing severe famine and complete exhaustion due to the lack of medical resources and supplies, compounded by the ongoing aggression against Gaza." He cautioned of an imminent collapse of the health system in all areas of the Strip.
The Palestinian official stressed the urgent need to allow the entry of medical supplies for surgical interventions in time-sensitive cases. He also highlighted the spread of diseases in shelters and displacement camps due to shortages of clean water, food, and humanitarian aid.
Abu Afash appealed to the international community to intervene immediately to save the Palestinian people in Gaza by permitting the delivery of food and medical aid. He emphasized that current conditions are "unlivable" for civilians under these harsh and oppressive circumstances.
This comes as Olga Cherevko, spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Gaza, stated that "too much time has been wasted discussing proposals and plans" to deliver relief to Gaza’s population, despite the existence of a "proven UN mechanism capable of large-scale aid delivery." Meanwhile, she added, "people are dying and being left without assistance."
