Santiago - Saba:
The Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs commemorated the 77th anniversary of the Nakba of the Palestinian people in the capital, Santiago, with wide official and popular participation.
The event was attended by Chilean Foreign Minister Alberto Van Klaveren, Secretary General of Foreign Policy at the Ministry, Rodrigo Olsen, and the Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Chile, Vera Pabon.
Participating in the event were accredited Arab and foreign ambassadors, representatives of the diplomatic corps, members of the House of Representatives and Senate, the President of the Palestinian Community in Chile, Maurice Khamis, the Archbishop of Santiago, Chile, Cardinal Fernando Chumali, representatives of local institutions, and a group of members of the Palestinian community.
Chilean Foreign Minister Alberto Van Klaveren said that commemorating the anniversary is not only a matter of remembrance, but also of highlighting the suffering of millions of Palestinians living in exile, under occupation, or in refugee camps. He emphasized that the Nakba "is not a page from the past, but a living wound that bleeds like never before."
He added that the catastrophe facing the Palestinian people has not ended, but has become more tragic and complex. He described the Israeli aggression as "a stain on our collective conscience," citing statements by UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
Minister Van Klaveren expressed his deep sorrow and shock at the deaths of hundreds of children from starvation in the Gaza Strip due to the prevention or reduction of the flow of humanitarian aid. He emphasized that the use of starvation as a weapon of war is a grave violation of international humanitarian law.
He emphasized that "the Palestinian people have the right to live in freedom and sovereignty on their land, a non-negotiable right, guaranteed by the UN Charter, and supported by dozens of international resolutions."
The event included a short film produced by the Palestinian Embassy in Chile, titled "77 Years and the Nakba Continues," highlighting the ongoing suffering of the Palestinian people since 1948. Attendees were also invited to watch a digital presentation on the stages of the Nakba, past and present.
