London - (Saba):
UK inflation rose to its highest level in more than a year last month, after households were hit by higher bills in April, according to official data.
The Office for National Statistics said the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose to 3.5% in April, up from 2.6% in March, the highest rate since January 2024.
Economists had expected inflation to rise to 3.3% last month.
This comes after the Office for Gas and Electricity Markets (OGEM) raised the energy price cap by 6.4% in April, following a decline the previous year, in addition to a series of bill increases for struggling households, including sharp increases in water bills, council tax, mobile phone charges, and broader charges.
