Washington - Saba:
The United States has notified its trade partners that the April 2 tariffs will be reinstated starting August 1 if no progress is made in negotiations.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNN on Sunday: "President Donald Trump intends to send messages to some of our trade partners, reminding them that if they do not break the deadlock, they will return to the April 2 tariff levels as of August 1. So I think we will see many deals very soon."
The Treasury Secretary noted that these measures will apply to countries that are not major trade partners of the United States.
On Friday, Trump announced that his administration would send the first of ten messages to twelve trade partners that day, introducing new tariffs on imports, and that the remaining partners would be notified by July 9.
According to him, the tariffs will take effect on August 1, ranging between 10% and 70%.
It is worth noting that after returning to the White House, Trump began tightening trade policy by imposing tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, increasing them for China, and then announcing tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automobiles.
The peak was the April 2 announcement, which imposed a baseline rate of 10% on imports and higher "reciprocal" tariffs on certain countries. However, the tariff increase was suspended just a week later, and the U.S. began trade negotiations with several partners.
