Beijing - Saba:
China warned on Wednesday that the "Golden Dome" missile project announced by US President Donald Trump "undermines global stability" and called on the United States to withdraw it.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a press conference that this project carries "strong offensive implications" and increases the risks of the militarization of outer space and the arms race.
He added, "The United States, in its pursuit of an 'America First' policy, is obsessed with seeking its own absolute security. This violates the principle of non-compromise on the security of all countries and undermines global strategic balance and stability."
She continued, "China is deeply concerned about this matter, and we urge the United States to abandon the development and deployment of a global missile defense system as soon as possible."
Trump announced on Tuesday that the United States had decided on the design of the Golden Dome air defense missile system, which will also include space-based interceptor missiles.
Trump expressed his belief that this system, which aims to "prevent threats from China and Russia," will be ready for implementation within two and a half to three years.
