Texas – SABA:

Several people were reported dead or missing in the U.S. state of Texas on Friday, following torrential rainfall that triggered a sudden flood of the Guadalupe River.

Rescue teams deployed boats as raging floodwaters threatened communities, natural areas, and campgrounds near the riverbanks.

Up to 10 inches (25 centimeters) of rain fell in just a few hours overnight in Kerr County, central Texas, causing a sudden rise in the Guadalupe River.

Authorities warned residents near creeks, rivers, and particularly along the Guadalupe, to immediately evacuate to higher ground, urging the general public to avoid unnecessary travel.

Kerrville Mayor Joe Herring stated in a press conference:

“The incident happened at night while people were asleep in their beds. Please pray for our community.”

The Kerr County Sheriff’s Office confirmed fatalities but withheld further details.

The National Weather Service reported that the Guadalupe River is rising rapidly, reaching its second-highest level ever recorded, surpassing the 1987 flood.

Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly said dozens of people were rescued Friday morning, with search and rescue efforts still ongoing.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott pledged state aid for affected communities in the Hill Country, including the cities of Kerrville, Ingram, and Hunt.

In a statement, Abbott urged Texans to:

“Follow guidance from state and local officials, and monitor local weather forecasts to avoid driving through flooded areas.”
