Greenland PM: Ready for partnership with US provided mutual respect

Nuk - Saba:

Greenland's new Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen announced on Sunday that the island is ready to enter into a strong partnership and develop its relations with the United States provided that this is coupled with mutual respect.

In response to a question about whether Greenland is ready to strengthen cooperation with the United States, Nielsen said, "We are ready for a strong partnership and to move forward in developing our relations, but we want this to be met with respect," according to Danish television channel TV2.

During a joint press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen during his official visit to Denmark, Nielsen reiterated that Greenland "will never be a property that anyone can buy."

For her part, Frederiksen said, "We are in the process of modernizing relations between Greenland and Denmark," adding that she would be happy to meet with US President Donald Trump.

It's worth noting that Trump reiterated his statements last March, asserting that Greenland "will, one way or another" come under American control, promising the island's residents prosperity if they join the United States.

It's worth noting that Greenland was a Danish colony until 1953 and remains part of the Kingdom of Denmark. However, in 2009, it gained extensive autonomy, granting it broad powers to manage its internal affairs.
