Hodeidah - Saba:
A meeting at the Office of Economy, Industry, and Investment in Hodeidah province discussed on Saturday the requirements for supporting the carpentry workshop sector as part of efforts to enhance local production and reduce import costs.
The meeting, which included representatives of carpentry workshops in Hodeidah city, emphasized the need for a comprehensive survey of active carpentry workshops in the city. Adnan Hashed, Director of the Agricultural Services Foundation, stressed the importance of preparing a detailed report on their conditions and needs to enable relevant authorities to provide appropriate support and encourage local products.
For his part, Saleh Atifa, Director General of the Office of Economy and Industry, highlighted the necessity of field visits by specialized authorities and the Standards and Metrology Organization to assess workshop operations, evaluate product quality, and determine daily operational capacity. This would enhance the competitiveness of local products compared to imported ones.
He also emphasized forming a joint technical committee comprising the Office, the Agricultural Services Foundation, and the Chamber of Commerce to conduct the field survey, classify workshops, and enter their data into a unified system to regulate the sector and ensure its inclusion in official support programs.
Meanwhile, Mohammed Al-Hatami, Director General of the Chamber of Commerce, praised successful localization initiatives for local products such as dairy and mango pulp, achieved through government and community efforts. He stressed the need to replicate these experiences in the carpentry sector and empower local workshops to produce competitive, high-quality goods.
Participants agreed on the importance of encouraging workshops to submit samples of their products—such as bedrooms, office desks, and meeting rooms—for evaluation by technical authorities. Feedback would help improve the quality of local wooden products.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to conduct joint field visits to survey active carpentry workshops in the city, prepare a unified data form, , assess their production and technical capacities. This will pave the way for a comprehensive report with technical and regulatory proposals to support the sector and strengthen its role in the local economy.
