Kyiv - Saba:
Mass demonstrations erupted in Kyiv, Lviv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Odessa after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a law effectively abolishing two of the country's main anti-corruption bodies: the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPP).
On Tuesday, the Ukrainian parliament approved a bill to revoke the independence of two anti-corruption agencies: the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPP). Volodymyr Zelenskyy later signed the relevant law.
A number of Ukrainian parliamentarians viewed the bill as an attempt to eliminate the country's anti-corruption structures. By evening, media reported that protests had begun in Kyiv, Lviv, Dnipropetrovsk, Odessa, and other cities.
The rally in Kyiv took place in the immediate vicinity of Zelenskyy's office building. Ukrainian media reported that Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko arrived at the capital's rally.
Protesters in Kyiv chanted anti-government slogans, expressing their anger at what they described as a "corrupt clique."
These developments come amid accusations that billions of dollars in Western aid have been diverted to private interests under the guise of "democracy."
