A meeting held on Wednesday in the capital Sana'a, chaired by Mayor of the Capital Dr. Hamoud Obad, discussed the coordination mechanism among the Local Council of the Old Sana'a District, the General Authority for the Preservation of Historic Cities, the Local Water and Sanitation Corporation, and local community leaders to rehabilitate the gardens and orchards of Old Sana'a.
The meeting, which included Chairman of the Social Affairs Committee in the Capital's Local Council Hamoud al-Naqeeb; Chairman of the Historic Cities Authority, Abdulwahab al-Mahdi; Director of the Water Corporation, Engineer Mohammed Mada'is; Director of Community Initiatives Projects in the Capital, Engineer Ahmed al-Mashriqi; and Director of the Old Sana'a District, Mahdi Arhab, discussed the current state of the gardens and orchards and ways to implement their rehabilitation.
The participants reviewed aspects related to the rehabilitation and improvement efforts, including the provision of water, responsibilities of the concerned authorities, and the required resources, mechanisms, and joint efforts to ensure successful implementation.
The meeting approved the implementation of an aerial water tank project in the Shusha neighborhood, with 70% of the cost funded by the local authority and 30% as a community contribution.
The Water Corporation will implement a solar-powered pumping system to transfer water from the well to the tank. Engineers will be assigned to prepare a proposal and technical concept for restoring water sources and maintaining the irrigation basins.
The meeting tasked the Historic Cities Preservation Authority with setting implementation priorities and coordinating with the Awqaf Office to operate five Awqaf wells to ensure a sustainable water supply to the gardens and orchards, improve their condition, and enhance the environmental situation in the Old City of Sana'a.
The Mayor of the Capital emphasized the importance of coordination between the Historic Cities Authority, the local authority, and relevant parties to actively contribute to the rehabilitation and cultivation of Old Sana'a's gardens and orchards, while preserving their historical and aesthetic character.
