New York - Saba:
Pakistani Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar stressed that the credibility and effectiveness of the UN Security Council have been eroded by selective implementation of its resolutions, double standards, and the politicization of humanitarian principles.
In his remarks last night during an open session of the UN Security Council on the peaceful resolution of conflicts, the Pakistani Foreign Minister said, "Multilateralism is important not only because it facilitates diplomatic action, but because it is a necessary requirement in this era. Resolving conflicts through peaceful means is not just a principle, but the essence of global stability."
He pointed out that the international community faces a deeply troubling picture, due to unresolved conflicts, chronic disputes, escalating new crises, geopolitical rivalries, the erosion of trust in multilateral institutions, and violations of UN Security Council resolutions.
He pointed out that all of this undermines the shared commitment to maintaining international peace and security and respect for international law, emphasizing that the flames of war continue to rage throughout the world.
He added, "We must all recognize that lasting peace is not built through a show of force or unilateralism, but through dialogue, mutual respect, and inclusive diplomacy."
He emphasized that the primary responsibility for resolving conflicts peacefully lies with the UN Security Council.
He added, "We continue to witness the persistence of unresolved conflicts that have been on the Council's agenda for decades."
He continued, "Selective implementation of Council resolutions, double standards, and the politicization of humanitarian principles all undermine the Council's credibility and effectiveness, and the ongoing injustices in Palestine and Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir are clear examples of this."
Dar addressed developments in Gaza, noting that the humanitarian situation there is extremely dire and that civilians are paying the price of violence and deprivation.
He reiterated his call for an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and all occupied territories, adding, "A ceasefire must be a starting point on the path toward a more comprehensive and sustainable peace."
The Gaza Strip is experiencing one of the worst humanitarian crises in its history, with a severe famine intertwined with a genocidal war waged by Israel since October 7, 2023.
With Israel's complete closure of crossings and the ban on the entry of food and medicine since March 2, famine has spread throughout the Strip, and symptoms of severe malnutrition have appeared among children and patients.
