Washington - Saba:
The U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) announced the withdrawal of 700 U.S. Marines from Los Angeles, thus ending a controversial deployment of these forces in the city.
Former President Donald Trump had ordered the deployment of thousands of National Guard members and hundreds of Marines to Los Angeles last month to confront protests over arrests carried out by federal immigration authorities — a move opposed by city officials and California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement last night that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth “directed the redeployment of the 700 Marines, whose presence sent a clear message: lawlessness will not be tolerated.”
He added, “Their swift response, steady discipline, and visible presence played a key role in restoring order and upholding the rule of law.”
For her part, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced the Marines' withdrawal on the “X” platform, calling it “another victory” for the city and stating that the deployment of the forces had been “unnecessary.”
The Marines' withdrawal comes after the Pentagon announced last week that Hegseth had ordered the withdrawal of 2,000 National Guard personnel from Los Angeles, reducing the overall military presence in the city by nearly half.
