US President Donald Trump acknowledged that Russian authorities had succeeded in dealing with the sanctions imposed by the United States, praising Russian President Vladimir Putin, describing him as a "professional." Trump told reporters, "The Russians are handling the sanctions well. Putin knows what he's doing. He's a pro."
Trump added that his last phone call with Putin discussed, among other topics, imposing new US sanctions on Russia.
Earlier, Yuri Ushakov, aide to the Russian president, stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin informed his US counterpart Donald Trump during a phone call that Russia would not give up its efforts to eliminate all the root causes of the confrontation that erupted in Ukraine.
Ushakov told reporters after the phone call between Putin and Trump, "Another phone call that lasted about an hour between Putin and Trump just ended."
He added, "Of course, the Ukrainian issue was discussed, and Donald Trump again raised the issue of a rapid cessation of military action."
It's worth noting that the phone call between Trump and Putin took place on Thursday amid the continuing stalemate in efforts to resolve the Ukrainian conflict diplomatically.
