London – Saba:
The British newspaper, The Guardian, revealed on Saturday warnings from doctors in the Gaza Strip of a escalating humanitarian disaster threatening the lives of hundreds of infants due to the severe shortage of baby formula and Israel's ban on its entry into the besieged Strip.
The doctors confirmed to the newspaper that Israel continues to prevent the import of baby formula and essential nutritional supplements for breastfeeding mothers, leading to the death of some mothers from starvation and malnutrition, while others suffer from deteriorating health conditions that prevent them from breastfeeding their children.
Dr. Ahmed Al-Farra, head of the pediatric department at Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, said that the supply of baby formula in his ward is only enough for one week. The doctor has run out of formula milk for premature babies, and is forced to use regular formula and distribute it to the children under his care.
According to the report, hundreds of infants are in immediate danger, with deaths among them recorded in recent weeks. Doctors described this as a "worrying sign of an impending famine crisis" that could decimate Gaza's most vulnerable population, particularly children and newborns.
The Guardian quoted medical teams as saying that the conditions in Gaza are "unbearable," and that the lack of basic food supplies and primary healthcare will lead to an "unprecedented health catastrophe," amid the continued deterioration of the health system and the scarcity of humanitarian supplies.
This report comes at a time when international organizations are increasingly warning of widespread hunger and malnutrition in the Strip, following months of a severe blockade imposed by the Israeli enemy, preventing the entry of sufficient food and medical aid. This threatens a widespread humanitarian crisis unless the blockade is lifted immediately.
