European stock markets fell on Friday after US President Donald Trump threatened to impose 50% tariffs on European Union products imported into the United States starting June 1, in a post on his Truth Social platform.
The Paris Stock Exchange fell 2.43% around 2:00 PM, Frankfurt Stock Exchange fell 2.03%, and Milan Stock Exchange fell 2.77%.
Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform: "The European Union is very difficult to deal with, and was created primarily to exploit the United States commercially... Our discussions are at a standstill."
He continued, "Under these circumstances, I recommend imposing a 50% tariff on the European Union, effective June 1."
