German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius called on Europe to prepare for the day when Russia and Ukraine agree to a ceasefire.
The German minister said at a press conference in Rome, "Even if a ceasefire is not on the horizon at the moment, we must think not only about today, but also about the first day after a possible ceasefire regime comes into effect."
According to him, Germany has offered to assume the leadership role in the "coalition of the willing" through Continuing support for Ukraine's reconstruction after the ceasefire and truce began.
On Friday, the first negotiations in three years between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations concluded in Istanbul, under the auspices of Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. The negotiations lasted approximately two hours.
Commenting on the negotiations, Fidan said, "Today was an important step toward world peace. As a result of intensive diplomatic efforts, the Russian and Ukrainian delegations held a meeting in Istanbul."
He added, "Following the meeting, they agreed to a prisoner exchange in the form of 1,000 for 1,000 as an initial confidence-building measure. They also agreed to inform the other party in writing of the conditions that would make it possible to reach a ceasefire."
