RAMALLAH July 15. 2024 (Saba) - Khaled Mahajneh, lawyer for the Prisoners and Ex-Detainees Affairs Authority, has revealed alarming testimonies regarding the treatment of detainees from the Gaza Strip during his visit to Ofer prison.
In a statement issued by the Prisoners’ Affairs Authority and the Prisoners’ Club on Monday, Mahajneh relayed accounts from detainees, including one identified as (M.A.), who described severe abuse. According to the testimonies, some detainees were subjected to sexual harassment, forced to strip, and beaten in sensitive areas, resulting in serious health and psychological issues.
The detainees reported being attacked by police dogs while their hands were bound behind their heads and subjected to "ghost operations" involving beatings. Over 100 sick and wounded detainees are reportedly being denied treatment in overcrowded, poorly ventilated cement rooms measuring just five square meters. These rooms contain iron beds without mattresses or blankets, forcing many detainees to sleep on the floor, each room holds up to 25 detainees.
Meals are sparse and inadequate, consisting of only 100 grams of bread, a cucumber or tomato, and a small amount of milk, with detainees forced to eat while handcuffed. Bathroom facilities are exposed, with surveillance cameras focusing on the bathrooms, and showering time is limited to one minute.
Mahajneh also highlighted the presence of two torture wards within the detention center, where detainees are tortured out of sight but within earshot, their screams audible. Recently, occupation soldiers assaulted detainees, resulting in multiple broken limbs.
A particularly harrowing account involved a detainee transferred from the "Sde Teman" camp to "Ofer," who reported that a sick detainee died after being denied necessary medical treatment by the occupation soldiers.
These testimonies paint a grim picture of the conditions faced by Gaza detainees in Ofer prison, raising serious concerns about human rights violations.
