NIAMEY Sep. 05. 2023 (Saba) - Chinese ambassador to Niger Jian Feng said Tuesday that Beijing intends to play the role of mediator in the Niger crisis, after his meeting with the Prime Minister of Niger, who was appointed by the ruling military junta, Ali Zeine.
Ambassador Feng said in a statement broadcast on Nigerian national television “The Chinese government intends to provide good services and play a mediating role to reach a political solution to the Niger crisis that respects the interests of the surrounding countries.”
He added "Beijing always adheres to the principle of non-interference in the affairs of other countries."
The Prime Minister-designate of Niger confirmed the existence of “ongoing talks” for a “rapid withdrawal” of French forces stationed in the country, hoping to “maintain cooperation with France” and reach “an agreement within a few days” with the Organization of West African States ” ECOWAS.”
Zeine said the French forces are in an illegal situation in Niger, recalling that his country’s government has canceled military agreements concluded with Paris.
He confirmed his country’s ability to bypass the sanctions imposed by the ECOWAS group, indicating that it was open to dialogue, after the group imposed sanctions on Niger that included stopping all commercial and financial transactions between the African Republic and all its member states, in addition to freezing its assets in the central banks of the group countries.
