Arab Telecom Ministers to mull internet governance next Wed.


CAIRO, Jan 24 (Saba) -- Executive Office for Arab Ministers Council of Telecommunications and Information is to hold its 29th ordinary session in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, next Wednesday, Kuwait News Agency has reported.

Arab League Assistant Secretary General for Economic Affairs Dr. MohammAd Ibrahim Al-Tuwaijri said in a statement today that the current session which will last for one day will be presided over by Saudi Minister of Communications and Information Technology Jamil Al-Mulla.

He also said that Egypt will take over the post of the vice-president of the office's current line-up which includes Tunisia, Algeria, Djibouti, Iraq, Qatar and Libya, while Lebanon takes part in the meeting as an observer in its capacity as the host country.

Al-Tuwaijri also said that the Executive Office will discuss in its current session the possibility of launching annual Arab forum for internet governance like other similar gatherings that were established all over the world including Europe, eastern, western and central Africa.

Further, he noted that the meeting's agenda will highlight the current situation of Arab broadbands projects as well as studying the proposals made for the technical operation of these broadbands for the interest and under the full supervision of the Arab League.

He also said that the meeting's agenda covers topics of telecommunication and information technology sector, particularly the findings of the Arab Development, Economic and Social Summit in Sharm El-Sheikh which included a proposal on connecting the Arab internet networks as an influential method for boosting information exchange among the Arab countries and establishing communication among the Arab institutions operating in the domain of telecommunications and internet.
