US authorities announced that a gunman opened fire on Friday outside the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters in Atlanta, killing a police officer and damaging the building before the perpetrator was found dead nearby.
According to police statements reported by US media, the attack began near the nearby Emory University campus, prompting an immediate response from security forces. The shooting shattered windows in several buildings belonging to the CDC, a vital institution that researches infectious diseases.
Atlanta Police Chief Darren Sherbaum confirmed that the gunman was found dead on the second floor of a nearby building, without determining whether the cause of death was a result of police gunfire or suicide.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the attacker was carrying a long weapon. Three other firearms were also found at the scene, according to a security source who requested anonymity.
