Moscow - Saba:
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova announced that the United States is strengthening its conviction that its atomic bombing of Japan was the right move at the time and that it has no regrets about it at all.
Zakharova said in a broadcast on Sputnik Radio on Wednesday, as reported by the Novosti news agency: “Without remorse or repentance, their conviction that they acted correctly is strengthened. That is the problem. They have no regrets... What does it mean not to name the United States? This creates a comfort zone for them. It is not to take them out of their comfort zone, but to keep them in it so that they do not have to face the questions: Do you regret it? Would you do it again? Would you repeat this act?"
Zakharova believed that if the United States is not named as the party that carried out the atomic bombing, these questions will not be answered. She added, "It's time (for answers). But they lack something, and we know what courage and conscience are."
She noted that the tragic events in Hiroshima and Nagasaki have become a source of fake news.
She said, "A high-ranking representative of those cities spoke (on the anniversary)... and did not mention the United States, which dropped those bombs."
Meanwhile, the city's mayor said that the United States and Russia "did not draw the right conclusions and did not learn from those mistakes."
Zakharova commented with indignation, saying, "What a lie! But the UN Secretary-General repeats the same words."
In August 1945, the US Air Force dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The explosions and their aftermath killed 140,000 people out of a population of 350,000 in Hiroshima and 74,000 in Nagasaki. The vast majority of the victims were civilians.
In his message marking the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima, UN Secretary-General António Guterres did not mention the country that carried out the bombing. Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui also did not mention the country that dropped the atomic bomb on the city on August 6, 1945, during their speeches at the memorial service.
