Steve Witkoff, US President Donald Trump's special envoy, arrived at Vnukovo International Airport in the Russian capital, Moscow, following reports of his planned visit to Russia.
The Russian news agency Sputnik quoted its correspondent as saying: "The plane used by Witkoff is landing at Vnukovo Airport."
The Flightradar24 website, which tracks flight movements, showed Witkoff's plane, which took off from Florida, USA, crossing the border with Russia at around 6:11 a.m. Moscow time on Wednesday.
US President Donald Trump announced Tuesday evening that the United States and Russia would hold a meeting late Wednesday.
When asked in press statements whether he still planned to impose full secondary sanctions on Russia if a ceasefire was not reached by next Friday, Trump said: "I never mentioned a percentage. But we will impose a fair number of sanctions."
He added, "We will see what happens in the next short period. We have a meeting with Russia tomorrow (Wednesday). We will see what happens, and then we will make a decision."
He added, "What I am doing is ensuring that wars stop," describing the Ukrainian crisis as "(former President Joe) Biden's war."
