Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu announced his resignation as Prime Minister on Monday, while his Social Democratic Party (PSD) confirmed its withdrawal from the ruling coalition.
G4Media reported earlier that "the Romanian Prime Minister has confirmed his intention to leave office and has already held talks with Acting President Ilie Bologan."
The website added, "The candidates for the position of interim Prime Minister are Education Minister Daniel David, Deputy Prime Minister Marian Neacsu, and Interior Minister Catalin Predoiu."
The first round of the presidential elections in Romania took place yesterday, Sunday. According to the Central Election Commission, the leader of the opposition Nationalist Party, Gheorghe Simion, won 41% of the vote, while Bucharest Mayor Nicausor Dan came in second with 21%. Third place went to the representative of the current ruling coalition, Crina Antonescu, with 20.1% of the vote.
Eleven candidates are vying for the presidency of Romania. According to Romanian law, the winner of the presidential election is the candidate who receives more than half of the votes listed on the electoral lists. If the vote falls below 50%, a second round of voting will take place two weeks later.
The second round of the presidential election in Romania is scheduled for May 18.
