New York - SABA
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has offered mediation to help calm tensions between India and Pakistan, according to spokesperson Stephane Dujaric.
During a press briefing, Dujaric confirmed Guterres held phone calls with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
"The Secretary-General expressed deep concern over escalating tensions," Dujaric stated, adding, "He emphasized the urgent need to avoid actions that could lead to tragic consequences and reaffirmed the UN's readiness to support de-escalation efforts."
The diplomatic initiative follows recent violence in Jammu and Kashmir, where an armed attack on tourists killed 26 people, further straining relations between the nuclear-armed neighbors.
Both nations have yet to formally respond to the UN's mediation offer as cross-border tensions continue with military alerts raised along the Line of Control.
