UNRWA: Israel deprives 800 children of their right to education in Al-Quds

New York - Saba:
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said on Wednesday that Israeli occupation authorities will deprive 800 children of their right to education as six of its schools in East Al-Quds face imminent closure.

Roland Friedrich, Director of UNRWA Affairs in the West Bank, stated in a post on X: "In less than ten days, closure orders issued by Israeli officials against six UNRWA schools in East Al-Quds will come into effect."

He explained that the school closures "threaten the right to education of around 800 children, constituting a violation of Israel’s obligations under international law."

Friedrich added, "UNRWA schools in Shuafat Camp have been part of the camp’s social fabric for decades, providing children with high-quality education close to their houses."

He continued, "Girls now fear their dreams of becoming doctors or scientists will vanish if they lose their right to education."

The occupation authorities have decided to shut down six UNRWA schools in Shuafat Camp, Silwan, Wadi al-Joz, and Sur Baher in Al-Quds, starting on the 8th of next month.

On October 28, 2024, the Israeli Knesset overwhelmingly ratified two laws banning UNRWA from operating inside Israel, revoking its privileges , facilities, and prohibiting any official contact with the agency. The decision came into effect at the end of January this year.
