UN: Reconstruction of destroyed Gaza homes could continue into 2040

Gaza – Saba:

The United Nations announced on Thursday that the reconstruction of Gaza homes destroyed by the Zionist aggression on the Strip may continue until 2040.

According to Ma'an News Agency, the United Nations estimates that the reconstruction process may cost more than $ 80 billion, while the removal of rubble remains one of the most difficult obstacles that will face this process, especially since about 70% of Gaza's housing has suffered damage ranging from total to partial destruction.

In a report released by the United Nations last October, the cost of removing more than 42 million tons of rubble alone was estimated at more than a billion dollars.

The process is complicated and could drag on for years due to the presence of bombs, mines and unexploded rockets, as well as contaminated and dangerous materials and bodies still buried under the rubble.

The UN has made clear that the reconstruction of destroyed homes could take until at least 2040 and possibly several decades if the pace of reconstruction continues at the same pace as previous wars in the Strip.

The effects of the war have also cast a heavy shadow on the agricultural sector, which is the main source of food for the people of Gaza.

Satellite imagery analysed by the United Nations showed that more than half of the farmland vital to food production had been degraded by the aggression.
