South Korea's opposition leader calls for vote to impeach president

Seoul - Saba:
South Korean opposition leader Lee Jae-myung called on ruling party lawmakers to vote in favor of a bill to impeach President Yoon Suk-yeol this week over his failed attempt to impose martial law.

The leader of the main opposition Democratic Party made these statements today, Friday, in the National Assembly one day before the vote on Yoon's impeachment, saying that "history will remember their decisions," stressing that impeachment is the fastest and safest way to "end this chaos."

The Democratic Party submitted a new proposal to impeach the country's president yesterday, Thursday, "days after he escaped impeachment" due to most of the ruling People Power Party lawmakers boycotting the vote.

“Regardless of their political party or ideology, whether progressive or conservative, lawmakers must respect the Constitution and follow the commands of the sovereign people,” Myung said.

What lawmakers should protect is not President Yoon or the ruling People Power Party, “but the lives of citizens who are crying on the streets in the cold weather,” he added.

The head of the National Police Agency told investigators that the president had ordered police to “arrest” all lawmakers during the imposition of martial law last week.

“National Police Agency Commissioner General Cho Jae-ho made the remarks while being questioned about his role in Yoon’s short-lived imposition of martial law on Dec. 3. He has been detained and is awaiting a court’s decision on whether to formally arrest him,” sources familiar with the matter said.
