UNRWA says schools protected under inte'l law, there is no safe place in Gaza

GAZA August 22. 2024 (Saba) - The media advisor to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has confirmed that the agency's schools are supposed to be protected under international law.

The agency noted bombing the schools' facilities represents a serious violation of human rights, and raises questions about a safe place for refugees in the Gaza Strip.

The advisor said in a statement the absence of any safe place in the Strip puts civilians, including children and women, in direct confrontation with imminent danger, which increases the ongoing humanitarian suffering.

The UN advisor asked: "Where do those who were in the school that was bombed go?".. stressing that the international community must assume its responsibilities in protecting civilians in accordance with international laws.

He pointed out that the absence of accountability for such violations represents a dangerous precedent, as it encourages the continuation of committing more crimes without fear of punishment.

The UN advisor considered that this matter reflects the failure of the international community to carry out its duty towards protecting Palestinian civilians, especially in light of the harsh conditions experienced by the residents of the Gaza Strip.

At the end of his statements, the advisor called for the necessity of activating international accountability mechanisms to ensure that such violations are not repeated, and to work to provide real protection for civilians in Gaza, and to ensure respect for international humanitarian law.
