GAZA August 16. 2024 (Saba) - The Director of Field Hospitals at the Palestinian Ministry of Health, Marwan Al-Hams, on Friday afternoon declared the registration of the first positive case of the polio virus in the Gaza Strip.
Al-Hams said in a statement that UNICEF informed them of the registration of the first case of a child with "polio" in the Gaza Strip, warning that the infection would be compared to 200 cases that have not yet been discovered and have not shown symptoms.
He pointed out that with the registration of the first infection with the virus, the Gaza Strip will begin to record more cases, noting that the world celebrated shortly before the end of the spread of this epidemic, but with the war of extermination in Gaza, there is another war represented by the spread of epidemics and the first victims are children.
Earlier in the day, the United Nations today requested a seven-day truce in the Gaza Strip to vaccinate more than 640,000 children under the age of ten against poliovirus, which was recently discovered in the territory's sewage.
On July 29, the Palestinian Health Authority declared Gaza an epidemic area of "polio" after it was detected in sewage water in Khan Yunis and Central governorates, which constitutes "a health threat to the residents of the Gaza Strip and neighboring countries and a setback to the global polio eradication program."
