SANA'A July 22. 2024 (Saba) - The second workshop on “Gap Analysis and Formulating Critical Issues and Strategic Directions” for updating the National Water Strategy began on Monday in Sana'a.

Organized by the General Authority for Water Resources, the two-day event gathers 40 participants from various entities in the water sector.

The workshop, part of the broader National Water Strategy Update Project (1446-1455 AH/2024-2025 AD), aims to equip participants with skills to analyze and identify gaps, and to develop strategic alternatives for better performance in water management.

At the opening, Minister of Water and Environment, Eng. Abdul Raqeeb al-Shurmani, highlighted the significance of the workshop in addressing Yemen's critical water issues, including resource scarcity and climate change.

Al-Shurmani emphasized water's essential role in driving an agricultural revolution and optimizing national resources for drinking water, agriculture, and industry.

The Minister expressed confidence in the workshop's ability to produce actionable recommendations and stressed the ministry's commitment to improving drinking water services and formulating effective policies.

Eng. Adulkarim al-Sufyani, Undersecretary of the Water Resources Authority, underscored the importance of the workshop in identifying gaps and strategic directions, following the first workshop's analysis of the current situation.

Al-Sufyani emphasized the aim of the national water strategy to ensure equitable water distribution, especially to economically disadvantaged sectors, and to enhance sustainable development while avoiding project overlaps and public fund wastage.

The workshop is expected to yield a strategic document outlining critical issues and future projects to optimize Yemen's water resources and address ongoing challenges.
