Indonesian earth collapse leaves 23 people killed, 35 missing

JAKARTA July 10. 2024 (Saba) -At least 23 people have died and 35 others are unaccounted for following an earth collapse caused by torrential rains last Sunday in an illegal gold mine in the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.

The landslide on Sunday morning in Suwawa district, Gorontalo province, killed miners and residents living nearby, head of the Basarnas rescue agency, told Reuters.

66 survivals have been found so far, Heriyanto added, despite challenges facing the rescue efforts due to clay and bad weather that forced some workers to walk for 20 kilometers in order to reach the site.

Indonesia repeatedly witnesses landslides whose danger in many times are aggravated by woods removals and illegal excavation activities in remote areas.
