UNRWA: Severe shortage of medicines, fuel in Gaza Strip hinders life-saving operations

GAZA June 27. 2024 (Saba) - The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has confirmed that Palestinian citizens in the Gaza Strip are in dire need of health care, noting that a few of its health centers are still operating in the Strip.

In a post on its official page on the X platform, on Thursday, it said that the acute shortage of medicines and fuel hinders life-saving operations, stressing that the safe and sustainable access to aid cannot be delayed any longer.

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that insecurity and Israeli military operations in the southern Gaza Strip remain a major obstacle to humanitarian operations, adding that last week a number of Israeli attacks hit the vicinity of the Mawasi area, where many displaced people have taken refuge.

Partners working to support healthcare in Gaza warn that power cuts due to fuel shortages continue to put the lives of critically ill patients, including newborns, dialysis patients and those in hospital intensive care units.

Fuel shortages are also hampering efforts to respond to the water, sanitation and hygiene crisis across the Strip, according to OCHA.

Partners working on the response in this area reported that water production from groundwater wells, the main source of water supply in Gaza, contracted by more than 50 per cent, from 35,000 cubic metres per day to just 15,000 cubic metres.
