[Mon, 24 Jun 2024 17:17:02 +0300]

SEOUL June 24. 2024 (Saba) - 20 people were killed today after large fire broke out at a lithium battery plant in South Korea.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency quoted fire brigades as saying that firefighters were able to put out the bulk of the fire at the site, and are pulling bodies from the charred building, noting that 20 bodies were found.

An earlier toll had put one dead and another seriously burned, and 21 people were still missing.

The battery plant is owned by South Korea's leading battery manufacturer Arisel Group and is located in Hwaseong, south of Seoul.

The efforts of fire and relief teams continue, and the cause of the fire is not yet known.

South Korea is a major producer of batteries, particularly those used in electric vehicles, with factories supplying batteries to electric vehicle manufacturers around the world, including Tesla.
