Brazil’s Palmeiras became the first team to qualify for the quarterfinals of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup after defeating fellow Brazilian side Botafogo 1-0 in a match that went into extra time on Saturday evening.

The game, held at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, USA, marked the opening of the tournament's round of 16.

Neither team managed to score during regular time, forcing the match into extra periods. In the first half of extra time, Palmeiras' Paulinho scored the sole goal of the match in the 100th minute.

With this result, Palmeiras advances to the quarterfinals, where they will face the winner of the clash between England’s Chelsea and Portugal’s Benfica.

Meanwhile, Botafogo exits the Club World Cup, which is being held in the USA and Canada for the first time with a record 32 participating teams.
