NEW YORK March 01. 2024 (Saba) - The Bureau of the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People strongly called on donors that have suspended their funding to UNRWA to reverse such resolutions, which jeopardize the Agency's humanitarian and stabilization efforts throughout the region, particularly in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Al-Quds.
According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa today, the UN office reiterated its unwavering support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and its indispensable mission.
He stressed the need for attempts to tarnish the Agency's image and supported the Secretary-General's decision to conduct an independent investigation into Israeli allegations against a number of its staff.
The UN Office expressed grave concern about the catastrophic conditions in Gaza and obstacles to the implementation of UNRWA's mandate, noting that recent reports of malnutrition, threats of famine, the spread of disease and limited access to basic health care among Palestine refugees highlight the urgent need to increase UNRWA's support for the implementation of interim measures ordered by the International Court of Justice.
UNRWA's role extends beyond humanitarian efforts – "it symbolizes the international community's commitment to justice, human rights, peace and refugee rights."
He noted that supporting UNRWA "means standing by the Palestinian people until a just and lasting solution to the question of Palestine is reached in accordance with UN resolutions and international law."
The Office recognized UNRWA's role as a lifeline for Palestine refugees over the past 75 years, providing not only essential services, but also a sense of hope and stability amid protracted crises and injustices.
The UN Office renewed its urgent appeal for an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza, an end to the forced displacement of Palestinians, and unhindered access to humanitarian assistance.
