The police statement stated that the plane, flight number AI 171, was en route from Ahmedabad to London's Gatwick Airport when it crashed.
According to Indian media, at least 150 people were killed in the plane crash, while the remaining passengers sustained varying injuries.
NDTV confirmed that the Air India plane crashed just seconds after takeoff.
According to Flight Radar 24, the ill-fated aircraft was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.
The Indian news agency Asia International reported, citing the Gujarat State Police Control Room, that "an Air India plane has crashed."
An Air India spokesperson confirmed to the agency that "flight number AI 171, en route from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick Airport, was involved in an accident on Thursday," noting that the details are being verified.
