Nebenzya: Sanctions must be imposed against those who obstruct aid to Gaza Strip

WASHINGTON February 28. 2024 (Saba) - Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Security Council, Vasily Nebenzya, called last night for UN Security Council sanctions against anyone who obstructs humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip.

"The memorandum issued by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs leaves the Council with no other options but to continue to seek a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip to create the necessary working conditions for humanitarian and medical workers," Nebenzya was quoted by Sputnik as saying during a briefing to the Security Council, stressing his country's determination to achieve this.

Nebenzya added: "The Security Council has the right to consider imposing punitive measures against those who obstruct humanitarian access to those in need, and it is time to use them," explaining that the alternative draft resolution of the Security Council on the situation in the Gaza Strip proposed by the United States does not contain a call for a ceasefire, and "aims to expand UN protection for the Israeli operation in the Strip, this is not an alternative solution but a license to kill Palestinian civilians, which the United States seeks to make available to Israel, but it It does so this time by signing it by the UN Security Council."

He stressed that the only basic necessity to prevent mass famine in Gaza is an urgent ceasefire and Israel's compliance with international humanitarian law, pointing out that all attempts by the Security Council to adopt such a resolution have been thwarted by the United States, which has already blocked several Security Council resolutions.

Nebenzya held Washington fully responsible for the unprecedented number of civilian casualties as a result of this escalation, which has already reached 30,000 and this is the price of the US veto.
