North Korea opens borders to return of citizens in further easing of health restrictions
[27/August/2023]

SEOUL Aug. 27. 2023 (Saba) - North Korea on Sunday eased the health restrictions it imposed during the Covid-19 pandemic and allowed its citizens residing abroad to enter the country.

A North Korean Central News Agency report said on Sunday that the main emergency epidemic prevention center announced that "overseas citizens have been allowed to return home."

It stated that "the returnees will be placed under appropriate medical observation in quarantine wards for a week," adding that the decision was taken in light of "the declining epidemiological situation all over the world."

The decision adds to a series of steps taken by Pyongyang recently in terms of opening the borders to travelers.

Chinese and Russian officials attended a military parade in the North Korean capital last month, and were the first foreign dignitaries to visit the country in years. Last week, a delegation of North Korean athletes was allowed to travel to Kazakhstan to participate in a taekwondo competition.

Air Koryo Flight No. GS151 arrived in Beijing on Tuesday at 09:17 (01:37 GMT), according to the aircraft arrival time screen, after it took off from the North Korean capital at 08:30 (23:30). tg).

On Monday, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman confirmed the return of commercial flights between China and North Korea. "The Chinese side has approved North Korean Air Koryo's flight plans for the Pyongyang-Beijing and Beijing-Pyongyang lines," spokesman Wang Wenbin told reporters.

According to NK News, Air Koryo is also planning two flights between Vladivostok (far eastern Russia) and Pyongyang.
