Sana'a - Saba:
Minister of Social Affairs and Labor Samir Baja'alah chaired a meeting on Tuesday in the capital Sana'a to discuss the role and commitments of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Yemen.
Attended by UNHCR Representative to Yemen Marin Din Kajdomcaj, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Social Affairs for the Welfare and Services Sector Yasser Sharaf al-Din, and Directors General of Organizations and Displaced Persons Affairs, the meeting saw Minister Baja'alah review pressing issues related to displacement, the conditions of displaced persons, and the worsening humanitarian suffering.
Minister Baja'alah acknowledged UNHCR's vital role during Yemen's recent crises, expressing his hope that the agency would resume its humanitarian activities and projects. These initiatives were halted in the first half of this year due to declining donor support. He emphasized the importance of quickly commencing project implementation in accordance with the meeting's outcomes.
The Minister also highlighted urgent government measures to establish a strong and effective department within the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor dedicated to the care and organization of displaced persons' affairs. This new department will be responsible for developing appropriate plans and programs to secure their needs and ensure their protection.
For his part, Kajdomcaj affirmed the agency's commitment to swift implementation. He expressed appreciation for the Ministry of Social Affairs' cooperation and its understanding of the funding constraints that had impacted UNHCR's operations in Yemen over recent months.
