Sana'a - Saba:

Deputy Minister of Justice and Human Rights Judge Ibrahim al-Shami on Monday discussed with Chairwoman of the National Women's Committee Dr. Ghada Abu Talib mechanisms to improve the conditions of female prisoners and develop legislation.

The meeting addressed ways to promote women's rights and ensure their dignity, particularly in legal, human rights, and judicial aspects.

It also addressed the efforts of joint working groups between the Ministry and the Committee to study women's issues and develop appropriate solutions, particularly regarding female prisoners and women who have completed their sentences.

The meeting also addressed mechanisms for monitoring the conditions of women's prisons, ways to provide judicial and legal support to female prisoners, facilitating procedures and treatments for released prisoners to ensure aftercare, and establishing a family reform committee to assist women in overcoming social challenges after their release.

During the meeting, the Deputy Minister of Justice and Human Rights emphasized the importance of implementing legislation and laws related to women's issues, with a focus on improving the conditions of female prisoners and debtors.

He pointed out that Yemeni women enjoy full rights guaranteed by Islamic Sharia, the Yemeni Constitution, and relevant laws, noting the need to strengthen the practical application of laws and regulations.

Judge al-Shami reviewed the Ministry's efforts to provide legal aid to women and the field visits conducted by the Ministry's leadership and the National Human Rights Commission's staff to prisons to assess the humanitarian conditions of female prisoners.

He emphasized that the Ministry's leadership will study the proposals submitted by the National Women's Committee and submit the necessary recommendations to amend laws to serve women's issues, with a focus on provisions specific to female prisoners.

For her part, Abu Talib praised the efforts of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights in supporting women's issues and working to develop legislation that addresses their rights.

She considered the meeting to reflect a genuine desire to strengthen cooperation between the two sides to ensure justice and equality for Yemeni women, who are a fundamental pillar in building society.

During the meeting, head of the Human Rights Sector at the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights Ali Tayseer, Director of the Legal Department at the National Women's Committee Wafa Farea and the Director of Planning at the National Human Rights Commission spoke about the importance of raising awareness of women's rights, particularly in rural areas, through educational programs based on Islamic teachings.
