Iran announces radioactive contamination inside Natanz Nuclear Reactor
[Fri, 13 Jun 2025 20:04:14 +0300]

Tehran – Saba:

The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran announced that it had detected radioactive contamination inside Natanz nuclear reactor site, which was attacked by Israel on Friday.

However, the organization stated that there was no contamination outside and that there was no cause for concern.

The organization stated, "We need to clean up the radiation inside Natanz site and then assess the damage," according to Al Jazeera Net.

Iran confirmed on Friday that Natanz reactor was among the targets of the Israeli aggression attack.

Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi had previously said that the agency was closely monitoring the "very worrying situation in Iran," confirming that Natanz nuclear facility was among the sites targeted.

Grossi indicated that the IAEA is communicating with Iranian authorities regarding radiation levels and is also communicating with the agency's inspectors in the country.

Natanz nuclear reactor is Iran's main uranium enrichment facility. It is located in Isfahan Province, approximately 220 kilometers southeast of the capital, Tehran.

Iran began construction of the facility in secret, and it was revealed in 2002. It is designed to accommodate tens of thousands of centrifuges.

The facility covers an area of approximately 2.7 square kilometers and is built 8 meters underground. It is surrounded by a 2.5-meter-thick concrete wall and protected by an air defense system, barbed wire, and Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces.
