New York - Saba:
Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia warned that today's Israeli attack on Iran is pushing the Middle East to the brink of a 'major nuclear catastrophe,' expressing Russia's condemnation of the attack.
"We are forced to discuss a new, extremely dangerous, and irresponsible adventure by Israel in the region, which this time again is pushing the region towards a large-scale nuclear catastrophe," Nebenzia said during a Security Council session, according to Sputnik.
He added, "The international community must not and cannot remain a spectator to such a provocation... The potential radiological consequences of destroying nuclear facilities are alarming."
Nebenzia noted that Russia has emphasized for several years its rejection of coercive solutions to the issue of Iran's nuclear program, which would cause dire consequences "not only in the Middle East but throughout the world."
Nebenzia accused the West of "doing everything to add fuel to the fire of escalation. In fact, it has incited it, and its tension-causing actions in international forums have only pushed Israel to take extreme steps, creating the false impression that it can do whatever it wants."
He stressed that "Russia remains committed to upholding international law, respecting the UN Charter, and seeking solutions that prevent the region from sliding further into a new destructive war. We are ready to cooperate with all those who advocate diplomacy and seek ways to resolve existing contradictions peacefully."
The Kremlin press office reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Russia condemns Israel's actions, which violate the UN Charter and international law.
Following phone conversations between Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Kremlin press office confirmed that "Russia will continue its close contacts with both Iran and Israel to avoid the dire consequences of their conflict for the entire Middle East."
The Kremlin said in a statement: "The Russian side will continue its close contacts with the leadership of both Iran and Israel, with the aim of resolving the current situation, which carries dire consequences for the entire region."
