French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said on Friday that his country is determined to recognize the State of Palestine.

This came during the French minister's participation in a television program on RTL, according to the official Palestinian News Agency.

Barrot stated that France and Saudi Arabia will make pledges to remove obstacles to the recognition of the State of Palestine during the United Nations Conference on Palestine, scheduled to be held in New York from June 17 to 20.

The Foreign Minister, whose country co-chairs the conference with Saudi Arabia, noted that this recognition of the State of Palestine "will not be symbolic."

Barrot explained that France, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, bears a "special responsibility" regarding the issue of recognizing the State of Palestine.

He continued: "If we recognize the State of Palestine, it will be to change some things and make the existence of the Palestinian state more credible."
