New York - Saba:
The World Food Programme (WFP) called today, Thursday, for more essential food supplies to be brought into the Gaza Strip to avert the risk of famine.
In a post on its X platform account, the WFP stated that the recent limited entry of aid is not enough to keep Palestinian civilians in the Strip alive.
This comes as several bakeries supported by the UN programme resumed operations today, Thursday, in southern Gaza after limited quantities of flour were allowed in.
The UN programme said, "Some bakeries in Gaza have resumed production after receiving limited flour supplies, but this alone is not enough to keep Palestinians in the Strip alive."
It added, "More essential food supplies must be brought into Gaza to avert the risk of famine."
The 25 WFP-supported bakeries had been providing bread to Gaza residents at symbolic prices—2 shekels for a 2-kilogram bundle containing 23-24 medium-sized loaves—amid soaring prices for scarce goods and commodities.
These bakeries helped alleviate the humanitarian suffering of displaced people, who have been stripped of all their belongings due to the genocide committed by the Israeli enemy since October 7, 2023, rendering them "poor," according to Central Bank data.
On April 6, the WFP announced in a statement the closure of all its supported bakeries in Gaza due to shortages of fuel and flour, coinciding with the tightening of the Zionist siege and the blocking of humanitarian aid.
On Wednesday, 87 aid trucks designated for international and local organizations entered Gaza for the first time in 81 days, following the enemy’s intensified closure of crossings.
The Gaza Strip needs at least 500 daily relief, medical, and food aid trucks, along with 50 fuel trucks as a life-saving minimum, as famine worsens due to the enemy’s blockade of crossings for over two months.
Since March 2, the enemy has continued a deliberate policy of starving approximately 2.4 million people in Gaza by closing crossings to aid piled up at the borders, pushing the Strip into famine and claiming many lives.
Since October 7, 2023, the enemy has committed genocide crimes in Gaza, resulting in over 175,000 martyrs and wounded—mostly children and women—and more than 11,000 missing, in addition to hundreds of thousands of displaced people.
